POSETTE: An Event for Postgres 2024

POSETTE: An Event for Postgres (formerly Citus Con) is a virtual and free developer event happening on June 11-13, 2024—organized by the Postgres team at Microsoft. Come join us (schedule is online here) to learn from open source users, Azure database customers, and experts in PostgreSQL and Citus about how they use Postgres—and the incredible things you can do with the world’s most advanced open source database. You’ll be able to watch all talks on Postgres and the rich tooling and extensions in the Postgres ecosystem online immediately after the event is over.

What does POSETTE stand for?

POSETTE = Postgres Open Source Ecosystem Talks Training & Education.

Pronounced “/Pō-zet/”—just like rosette, but with a P.

Why did you change the name?

The name POSETTE was inspired by FOSDEM, where some people don’t know what FOSDEM stands for but are familiar with the conference name. POSETTE is an acronym for “Postgres Open Source Ecosystem Talks Training & Education”—and the word “ecosystem” in this name is key: we welcome talks about Postgres and all the many extensions and tools in the Postgres ecosystem.

POSETTE: An Event for Postgres (formerly Citus Con) will include talks from users, customers, and developers who work with Postgres, PostGIS, Citus, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, Azure Cosmos DB for PostgreSQL, Patroni, pgcopydb, PgBouncer, and other open source extensions to Postgres. We hope beginners and experts alike will attend, including:

What kind of topics will there be?

At POSETTE, there will be talks about how people use Postgres, Postgres extensions & tools, Azure Database for PostgreSQL - Flexible Server, Citus open source, as well as the Azure Cosmos DB for PostgreSQL managed service. There will also be some inspiring talks about what’s new in Postgres, in the Postgres ecosystem, in Citus, and on Azure… to shine a light on the latest PostgreSQL capabilities.

What will the format be?

This free and virtual event will include 4 unique livestreams. Each of the livestreams will include pre-recorded videos of the talks plus a live text chat with speakers and other attendees. Talks are 25 minutes long and in English. You’ll be able to chat with other community members on the #posetteconf channel in the Microsoft Open Source Discord before, during, and after the event.

Where can I find the talks from Citus Con in 2022 and 2023?

The playlist of all the talks for Citus Con: An Event for Postgres 2023 is online on YouTube. The playlist for the 2022 talks is on YouTube too. There are some great talks in these collections.

Do I need to register?

No, registration is optional, but if you’d like to receive reminders about this year’s POSETTE, the Microsoft Source newsletter, and information, tips & offers about Microsoft Reactor and other Microsoft products please do. When you register, if you you do not already have a Microsoft account, you’ll be asked to provide your name, job role, company, organization description, country, postal code, and whether or not this is your first Microsoft or Reactor event.

What is the difference between “Subscribe for news” and “Register”?

“Subscribe for news” is persistent from one POSETTE: An Event for Postgres event to the next. You will receive ~6 emails each year when: event dates are announced, the CFP opens, the CFP is about to close, the schedule & speakers are announced, a reminder the day before, and a wrap up with video links.

“Register” is for this year’s event only and is entirely optional. You’ll receive a few reminders about the event, as well as the Microsoft Source newsletter, and news about other Reactor events.

How to submit a talk proposal?

Thank you for your interest in speaking at POSETTE: An Event for Postgres 2024! The call for proposals is now closed. If you previously submitted your proposal, you can get to it on Sessionize. For those of you that submitted your talk proposals with all the information below, thank you!

  • Proposed session title & description
  • Your bio information (including a high-res, at least 1000x1000 pixels, bio pic and title)
  • Permission for the POSETTE team to publish your recorded talk and bio details online, if your talk is accepted
  • Timezone in which you live (including UTC offset) to help with scheduling of your pre-recording as well as scheduling which of the livestreams your talk will be part of.
  • Speaker experience, where you can tell us a bit about yourself, your qualifications, and whether you have presented before. Please share links to videos of talks you have given in the past, if you have them.
  • First-time speakers, please know we 110% welcome first-time speakers too, so it’s OK if you don’t have links to past presentations. Just be sure to tell us, in the Speaker Experience field, what your experience is giving internal talks and/or teaching people in any capacity—and how you plan to prepare for the talk.
  • CFP deadline: End of day Sunday Apr 07, 2024 at 11:59pm PDT (Pacific Daylight Time)

How long are the talks?

25 minutes each

What are the logistics for speakers?

If your talk is accepted, and you confirm your talk acceptance, these are the next steps. There will also be a “Virtual Speaker Meet & Greet” on May 2nd, and the POSETTE team will give you speaker tips to help you prepare for the virtual speaker experience.

  • All talks will be pre-recorded by the POSETTE team in advance of the event (with you presenting remotely.)
  • Pre-recordings will be scheduled for the weeks of May 13th and May 20th.
  • All pre-recorded talks will be livestreamed in one of the 4 livestreams on Jun 11-13.
  • Speakers will be asked to participate in the online text chat during the livestream of their talk on Jun 11-13.
  • Speakers will have the option (but are not required) to be on camera remotely during the livestream—to introduce the talk and answer a few questions at the end, time permitting.
  • All pre-recorded talks will be published online right after the livestreams, so your talk will be accessible to anyone with an internet connection.
  • Published talks will include high-quality captions for accessibility.

How will talks be recorded?

All talks will be pre-recorded by the POSETTE team (and you!) using Streamyard. Streamyard is a delight to use and you can run it in your browser—no need to download or install any special software. We will handle all the production too, from editing to curated captions.

Will there be moderators for the livestream?

Yes, each of the 4 livestream sessions will have 1 or 2 on-camera hosts, plus chat moderators.

Where will talks be posted online?

All talks for POSETTE: An Event for Postgres will be published, free for anyone to watch, on YouTube and on other public websites, including the Microsoft Learn portal. All talks will be posted immediately following the livestreams, and will include curated captions for accessibility.
